» Poem: Following Their Footsteps.
Following Their Footsteps.

Following Their Footsteps.

Feet follow the familiar path,
treading in grooves made in the past.
By age-old warriors of a long-ago battle
In my head, gun shots rattle.

I walk so free amongst their bones,
they gave their lives to protect our homes,
unknown to them, our existence
We forget them, we are distant

Young boys of 19, or 15 if they lied,
All alike, here they died
fighting for Britain, America and France
In horrors unheard of in poisonous gas.
.
The boys in blue of the RAF
Fighting the Lufftwaffe
In the skies above
The green of their country they did love.
They paid the ultimate price
of dying to give others a life.

60 years later, and we are again at war
Instead of less dying there now are more.
We have not learnt, the horrors remain
in the ground they look the same

Dead is Dead, in whatever century you live
to serve your country, that's always a risk.
your body left in foreign soil
mowed down, for an endless toil.

Those who gave without a question,
Their lives for our protection
in 1914,1945 and 2003
Will we forget them?
Forget what they gave?
Leave no flowers upon there forgotten graves?
Stretched out as far as we can see
Each one, representing a death of misery

The world wars seem such a long time ago,
But there are lessons still to be learnt.
Bush and Blair, take heed.
Be warned,
You will not be remembered like Churchill.
