Sad

I was eight when my world changed forever. There I was sitting in this little waiting room, hoping and praying that everything will turn out okay. I was in the room by myself, looking around, and wanting to know what was going on. My head was pounding, and I had it resting on my palm on the side of the chair. I was the only one that got out of it safe and I hoped that nothing major had happened to my family. I got up and started pacing back and forth across the waiting room. The nurse looked at me with a concerned look on her face.
“Are you okay?” she asked. I looked at her blankly, not saying anything. There was nothing to say, there was nothing to do.
“When is my family coming out?” I asked. She looked at me, and then she looked at a paper, and then looked back at me.
“I’m not sure honey,” she said softly like she knew exactly when they were coming out, but she was keeping it all to herself.
“I’m not honey,” I whispered. I kept walking back and forth, and shuffling my feet. It was Christmas Eve, and I was supposed to be home baking cookies, and eating delicious food. Instead I was in the hospital waiting room. I saw a doctor walk out and into the waiting room. He had a blank look on his face, showing nothing. I didn’t know if I was supposed to be happy or sad.
“Come and sit,” he instructed. I took the seat in front of him, and he kneeled down, becoming eye level with me. “You know that you and your family were in a serious accident right?”
“Uh, yeah,” I looked at his face, stubborn, hard, laugh lines on the edges of his eyes. I wasn’t paying attention to the task at hand.
“And you know that you were the only one unharmed right?” I knew that alright, but when was my family coming out to give me a hug, and go to dinner?
“When are mommy, daddy, and Patty coming out?” I asked. “We need to go to dinner now, since you know its Christmas Eve and all. Santa is bringing me my new teddy bear, and I need to be home soon or he won’t come!” I exclaimed.
“Your mom, dad, and Patty won’t be coming out,” the doctor stated, “They aren’t ever coming out.”
“How can they never come out? They were here before! Are they lost? Mr.? Are they lost?” But the doctor had already walked away. “Where are they? Are they playing hide and seek, because I am the best hide and seeker ever. Daddy told me that himself. Let me help find them!” The nurse took my hand.
“It’s going to be okay, your aunt and uncle are here to pick you up. See here they are honey,” she handed me over to my aunt and uncle standing at the doorway.
“I’m not honey!” I screamed. “I’m not honey! Where are mommy, daddy, and Patty? Where are they?”
My aunt grabbed hold of my hand and dragged me out the door screaming and crying. That was the night that would go down in history. That was the night that my life changed forever.
