» Poem: Ping-Pong Games and Paradise
Ping-Pong Games and Paradise
written by breakmyheart

Mom says:
"Don't do it
It's just a plan get in trouble."
Dad says:
"Let it rest
He'll be fine.
He knows what he's doing."
And you don't say a thing.

You're wondering how it's supposed to be.
One wants to baby you,
the other to treat you like a man.
and you,
stuck in the middle,
gasping for air
and a steady thought.
Don't you feel like drowning?

The back and forth
ping-pong game,
that never draws to an end.
And when you pack up,
no one even notices your footsteps.
They are so concentrated on this
small, insignificant game.

There's halftime, of course.
which is when they realize you're gone.
Neither thinks much of it,
"He'll be back," they both think,
slightly out of sync.
And you aren't thinking a thing.

On that lonely road, when they go back to their game.
You have the film reel,
in that head of yours.
You're fast-forwarding.
Imagining yourself on her steps,
with your heart in your hands.
And she, jumping in the car
kissing your knuckles,
knows that it's going to be paradise.
For the both of you.

In the early morning hours,
when the both of you are lying together
in the back seat of the car,
you wonder what they are thinking
and hear the beat of the ball hitting the table in response.
The two of you in your own world,
bundled up,
whispering secrets to each other.

It's some three days later
when they finally realize that you're not going to be back.
And of course,
each blames the other.
Endlessly pointing fingers,
which is what drove you to leave in the first place,
and they're still at it.
Mom says:
"I can't believe you let him go."
Dad says:
"It's just as much your fault as mine."
And you don't say
anything at all.
