The Courtyard

The air is bitter with the rasping teeth of cold.
I run through an intertwining path knowing that I have to be bold.
Leaves around me, dead like corpses from an apocalypse.
A hundred millenniums away I can still see.
Stones beneath my feet screaming to let them be.
The sun reversing it’s cycling through a moon of frozen time.
I don’t know where I’m going, I know that the truth is still not mine.

The gate comes before me like an atom in a titanic space.
Nothing around except despair and coldness.
The door looms.
Swirling mountains caress the brink of non-existence.
My hands as if lead by an unseen force, turn the handle of this strange fortress.

I stumble into this sanctuary away from the fighting of the wind.
Birds dislodge from bushes and twitter as they flee.
Flowers, trees with leaves as green as new, sunlight, warmth.
What is this miracle, this gem in a swamp?
What a change it is, from the harsh wind and graveyards of dead foliage.
Flowers just in bloom, lush sweet berry’s on bushes, leaves awash with chlorophyll.
I walk through this Eden, my feet hardly make any sound in the paved ground.

A well stands in the centre of this courtyard, like a king amongst his worshipers.
The well, the centre point of this heaven, the heart of its body.
The well, bringer of water to which everything needs to survive.
But it is dry.
No water waits at the bottom for its eager pale, only gravel and dirt.
No water to quench the thirst of any weary traveller, no water to make new life glisten.

Suddenly I’m running though a million doors, back into the darkness.
Time retracing itself by going forward.
Through archways and along battlements, through forests and beyond hills.
Up mountains, across wide, open spaces, through deserts, through snow.
Far away from tumbling clocks with springs that snag and rip.
Far away from the bent equilibrium of existence once new.
Far away from that place that I never believed was true.
