» Poem: riots in suburbia
riots in suburbia
written by draculasdaughter
12:26 AM 3/12/05
no one knows exactly how it all started
but there were rumors of a small boy
running from his home to join the fray
he was spotted darting through the crowds
in the litter strewn street
at that point, the street was quiet
the sky was grey
the crowds were black and white
like fish bumping shoulders
not saying a word...
and the boy ran on...
searching for something at the heart of the city
a sound
a sign of life
as he got closer, a low rumble began to stir
with every footfall, the resonance grew louder
louder...Louder...LOUDER
until the silent fish people began to scream
the walls shook and fell as the riot began
strangers smashing
breaking
burning
uniforms threw smoke bombs
beat flesh and bone with batons
tried to restore order
the boy stopped
he had reached the heart of the city
his quest ended
the chaos and screaming was reaching a breaking point
but he heard nothing
nothing but a soft sound
like quiet singing
a piece of newspaper floated past
a family photo plastered the front
the boy stared at his family on the front page
their dead eyes stared back

the silence broke
and it was rumored that the small boy
who stood at the heart of the city
tossed back his head and cried out
knocking every person down
until the city was quiet again.
