Maybe its time I just shut up,
Refrain from writing another verse,
Until I tell you why I started to begin with.
I met my shadow once,
Through a maze so green,
A hill crowned in moonlight,
Where he would hide out of sight.
On the hill a house was built,
Consuming all the light he hid within,
I opened the door to ask of him,
A simple question,
A simple word.
I knew i'd found him when I met the mirror,
So dusty and old,
Long forgotton in memories of old.
I turned to face him,
I knew his face well,
Like a soulless shadow,
Which he was,
Met my gaze and what he did i'll never forget.
He smiled and said,
"My friend, its time you come out of the cold,
You've been searching for me to hear your life told?
Listen, just shut your eyes,
Tonight look past your life,
Through your bedroom window,
Look past the city streets or little towns,
Through the kids running or police cars passing,
Close your ears to the gun shots and your girlfriend laughing.
Look past what really matters to you
And just believe for once that maybe you'll never be able to explain why your here."
I looked into the mirror and saw myself,
My soul,
My friend,
My smile.
Now I write this I wonder why im laughing?
Or why this bullet, as small as a pebble,
Burns in me so deep.
But I'll stand up and look into her soft eyes,
On the ice i'll hold her close and share her smile.
And for once just believe that this was meant to be,
That in the end i've found what i've wanted,
And as my fingers slip from her face,
I'm happy.
